It was finally time to bring in the sewing machine and start piecing all those 2×2 squares together. I started with the top row of sky and worked my way down the design wall. It is always amazing how much a quarter inch seam will shrink down a laid out design. When laying out these squares, it is important to remember that you lose the quarter inch margin on every piece. In order to have the proper blending of colors to form the shapes that your design requires, you must be able to visualize the final sewn edges to create those shapes. At this point in the process, I often will change a square or two if it doesn’t quite match up to the shape or color transition I was aiming for.
